Horse in a show stall with a hay net, grooming tote and tack trunk in the aisle

Winter brings a lot of horses and riders to Ocala, and many of them are headed to World Equestrian Center for the long winter show season. Whether you are trailering in for a weekend or settling in for weeks, a good horse show packing list keeps you from running to the store on show morning. Here is ours, sorted by where things go.

Most of the gear below is in our Amazon horse supply picks for Ocala barns.

What should you pack for a WEC Ocala show?

For a WEC Ocala show, pack for five areas: the stall, the grooming tote, first aid and paperwork, Florida winter weather and the rider. Start with the documents, because a horse without a current Coggins and health certificate may not get in. Then work through this quick checklist and the detailed sections below:

  • Stall: buckets, hay net, feed, bedding plan, stall guard, fan and extension cord if allowed, halter and lead.
  • Grooming: tote with brushes, hoof pick, shampoo, towels, sweat scraper, show sheen and braiding kit.
  • First aid: equine first aid kit, thermometer, vet and farrier contacts, and your horse’s Coggins and health certificate.
  • Weather: fly spray, fly mask, cooler or sheet for cool mornings and rain gear.
  • Rider: helmet, boots, gloves, show clothes and a folding chair.

2027 Winter Spectacular dates

World Equestrian Center lists the 2027 Winter Spectacular Show Series as running January 6 to April 4, 2027, with the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Ocala during Week VII, February 16 to 21, 2027, and Longines League of Nations during Week XI, March 16 to 21, 2027. WEC notes that dates are pending USEF and FEI approval, so check the official Winter Spectacular schedule before you book stalls or travel.

Paperwork: Coggins and health certificate

  • Coggins test. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services requires horses moving within or into Florida to have an official negative EIA (Coggins) test dated within 12 months.
  • Health certificate. Horses coming into Florida from another state also need an Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection that travels with the horse. Your vet issues it.
  • Show office rules. Read the prize list and venue rules for any extra health records, entries and your division’s tack and attire rules.
  • Product rules. Some competitions limit what can be used on a horse. Check before you pack anything new.

Stall and barn setup

A slow feed hay net keeps hay off the stall floor and stretches out eating time on long show days. We use the Weaver Equine Slow Feed Hay Net (36 in) (paid link). Hang it at a safe height and check it daily.

For handling and tying, an everyday nylon halter like the Weaver Leather Original Non-Adjustable Nylon Halter (paid link) works well. Many barns and show grounds prefer a breakaway halter for horses that are tied or left in a halter. Ask your barn manager and check the show rules. For that job, we picked the Leaders 3/4 inch Leather Halter with Engraved Name Plate (paid link), a leather halter with breakaway safety and an engraved name plate.

Grooming tote checklist

Keep everything in one tote so it moves from stall to ring in one trip. The Little Giant DuraTote grooming tote (paid link) has room for brushes, sprays and towels. Inside ours:

  • Hoof pick, such as the Wahl Professional Equine Hoof Pick (paid link)
  • Curry, hard brush, soft brush and face brush
  • Mane and tail comb and detangler
  • Shampoo, sponges, sweat scraper and towels
  • Braiding kit and show sheen
  • Fly spray and a clean cloth for the face

If you are stabled for weeks, hoof care matters. See our thrush treatment and hoof care guide.

First aid kit checklist

Ask the show office how to reach the on-call vet, and pack for the small cuts and scrapes that happen. A ready-made kit like the Equine Triage Kit (36 piece) (paid link) gives you a starting point. Add a digital thermometer, any medicines your vet has prescribed, and a card with your vet’s and farrier’s numbers and your horse’s normal vital signs.

Fly and weather gear for Florida winters

Winter in Ocala can mean cool mornings and warm afternoons, so pack layers for the horse and the rider. Flies ease off in winter but do not always disappear, so bring fly spray and a mask. Our best fly spray for horses in Florida guide covers both, including the Absorbine UltraShield EX Insecticide and Repellent (32 fl oz) (paid link) and the Farnam SuperMask II Fly Mask, without ears (paid link).

Warm afternoons and hard classes mean sweat. Bring a water plan and talk to your vet about electrolytes. Our guide to electrolytes for horses in Florida heat explains the basics and our pick, the Farnam Apple Elite Electrolytes (40 day supply) (paid link).

Rider and trailer essentials

  • Approved helmet, boots, gloves and show clothes
  • Spare reins, stirrup leathers and a tack cleaning kit
  • Folding chair, sunscreen, rain jacket and water for yourself
  • Trailer spare tire, jack and a basic tool kit; check tires, lights and hitch before you leave
  • Water jugs, a bucket and hay for the drive
  • Copies of your horse’s Coggins, health certificate and show entries

After the show

  • Clean and dry tack and tools before they go back in the trailer.
  • Log what you used up, forgot or never touched, and update the list while it is fresh.
  • Restock the tote so it is ready for the next show.

For the day-of grooming steps, see our show-morning grooming routine.
